Mayo Clinic - A Great Resource

A good place to research mental illness is on the Mayo Clinic’s web site. I’ll provide the link to the main Mental Health page here: Mayo Mental Health .

 Take care everyone!

Connect With Kids

As a therapist, I have lost count of the number of resources out there for parents about raising children. It is great that there are so many websites where you can find information, helpful articles, and support. On the other hand, it can be tough to know which sites have the best info and advice. Today, I want to introduce you to one that I think is one of the best.

Connect With Kids is a powerful network of parenting resources.  The topics are relevant and timely, and CWK addresses sensitive child and teen subjects with professionalism and wisdom. There are videos, articles, and also discussion boards so you can connect with other parents.

The website is here (Connect With Kids), and I highly suggest you check it out if you are raising a child or adolescent, or work with those ages as a health provider.

Check Out “Psychologies”

If you haven’t heard of this publication yet, it is definitely worth your time to check out Psychologies Magazine from the United Kingdom. The link to the website is here: http://www.psychologies.co.uk/ .

Last year I reviewed this magazine, and this year I am still impressed (link).

Here is my only complaint; I am not able to subscribe in the United States to have it mailed to me. Aaarrggghh!! Luckily I can continue to visit Target and Barnes & Noble to find it on my own.

Resolve to Be Active

Here in Wisconsin it is quite cold. This Thursday we expect a high temperature that is below zero degrees (Fahrenheit). Sometimes when it’s this cold people lose interest in their exercise routines, and in New Year’s resolutions that might have been made. Personally, I like simplicity in motivation. So here is an article I found today on staying motivated:

http://health.yahoo.com/experts/healthieryou/7471/jillian-michaels-motivation-tricks/

For those of you who don’t know who Jillian Michaels is, she is a fitness pro who was featured on the weight-loss television show, The Biggest Loser. There is more info on her at her website: http://jillianmichaels.com/meet-jillian.aspx .

I like her 5-step easy-to-follow, direct approach to staying motivated. At the same time, try to remember that the more time you spend trying to get motivated, the less likely you are to take action anyway. Nike really had it right when they used the slogan, “Just Do It.”

Holidays, Work, and Water

Happy Holidays to all of you celebrating them. I am glad the days are starting to get longer now that the Winter Solstice has passed. Just the thought of that helps a little each time I go out to shovel snow.

Here’s a thought I had this morning, and I don’t know if I’ve heard or read it before: Don’t just work at something, work through it.

I read up on a possible link between dehydration and headaches recently and want to list this interesting article. It provides some good reasons to stay hydrated. The link is: http://nutrition.about.com/od/hydrationwater/a/Water_headaches.htm

Have a great weekend everyone!
